Since he was ordered to pay the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook mass shooting $1.5 billion, where Alex Jones is now hasn’t changed all that much since before the lawsuit. In 2022, the right-wing conspiracy theorist was found to have defamed eight families who lost children in the massacre. Jones falsely claimed the shooting was a hoax and the parents were actors.

Born on February 11, 1974, Jones gained prominence through his radio show, The Alex Jones Show (founded in July 2000), where he discusses various conspiracy theories and promotes alternative viewpoints on politics, government, and global events. He’s known for spreading unfounded claims about topics such as government cover-ups, false flag operations, and alleged conspiracies involving mass shootings and terrorist attacks. He is also the publisher of the fake news site InfoWars.

Despite facing backlash, Jones has maintained a dedicated following and continues to be a polarizing figure in American media and politics. Among the prevalent conspiracies he’s promoted over the years, Jones has alleged that the United States government either concealed information about or outright falsified the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the September 11 attacks, and the 1969 Moon landing.

In October 2022, after three lawsuits, a jury ordered Jones to pay $965 million in damages to the families of eight victims of the Sandy Hook shooting for the suffering caused by years of lies that the massacre was a hoax. But so far, the disgraced broadcaster hasn’t paid those families a cent. Here’s where Alex Jones is now.

Where is Alex Jones now?

As far as we know, Alex Jones is living in Austin, Texas, and still running Infowars. As of December 2023, is back on Twitter (now known as X) after Elon Musk posted a poll asking users if Jones should be allowed to return to the platform. Jones had been permanently from the platform for 5 years after repeatedly violating its abuse policy. 2 million users voted, with the majority believing Jones should have his account reinstated.

Shortly after the result of the Sandy Hook lawsuits, Jones filed for bankruptcy. “The bankruptcy system does not protect anyone who engages in intentional and egregious attacks on others, as Mr. Jones did,” said Chris Mattei, a lawyer for the families in the damages case in Connecticut, per the New York Times. “The American judicial system will hold Alex Jones accountable, and we will never stop working to enforce the jury’s verdict.”

Thus far, though, Sandy Hook families have not received the money they’re owed, while Jones CNN reported his monthly expenses have skyrocketed. CNN reported that in July 2023 alone, Jones spent $93,180—excluding legal and professional fees—including $15,184 on payments to his wife Erika Wulff Jones, $7,900 on housekeeping, $6,338 on meals and entertainment, and a separate $3,388 on groceries, an August 29 court filing from lawyers for the families shows.

In January 2024, Reuters reported that Jones could exit Chapter 11 bankruptcy by late March or early April. A judge decided families whom he owes $1.5 billion for lying about the 2012 school shooting can vote on competing plans to resolve their claims.

The lawsuit is the center of a MAX documentary, The Truth Vs. Alex Jones, which examines how easily false information and spread and how insidious these conspiracy theories can be.

“What really attracted me was the opportunity to see the clash of these amplified lies and the whole theatre of disinformation with the processes of the court of law because the judicial system is the last place where you can actually determine truth to the best that we can,” filmmaker Dan Reed told The Guardian. “I thought that dragging Alex Jones into a court of law for telling lies, for monetising lies, about the murder of children would be an extraordinary thing to make a documentary about.”

One of the bereaved parents, Robbie Parker, who lost daughter Emilie in the tragedy, explained: “It got vile very quickly. Emilie’s memorial Facebook page became inundated. It was: ‘F—k you, motherf—er’ and ‘I know where you live, I have a gun’,” he said. “He totally stomped on and trashed the memory of this six-year-old girl.”

Reed then broke down why he believes Jones is so effective. “Alex is bright and cunning. He knows that what he’s saying is a tissue of lies. He has an onstage persona which conveys the intense belief in the lies that he tells. He’s making money. You can almost hear the cash register,” he said. “I think part of his successes is his ability to meld, anger and comedy. It’s sort of angertainment. He’s very watchable. As one of the parents says towards the end of the film, you can’t take your eyes off him.”

The Truth Vs Alex Jones is available to stream on Max. Here’s how to watch it for free.
